It Happened On #3

Gather around kids! It’s time for another edition of It Happened On

On September 30 1994… a 22-year-old student named Ronald Shamburger killed his ex-girlfriend, Lori Ann Baker. He broke into her room and shot her while she slept. He left but returned to remove the bullet from Baker’s head. He then proceeded to set fire to her house in an attempt to destroy the evidence, but realized that he had left his car keys inside. He surrendered to police outside the burning home. He was sentenced to death. Shamburger was executed by lethal injection in Huntsville, Texas, on Sept. 18, 2002.

Also, on September 30 1955, 24-year-old actor James Dean was killed when his Porsche hit a Ford Tudor sedan. The driver of the other car, 23-year-old Donald Turnupseed, was dazed but mostly uninjured.

As a special treat, also on September 30 1964 the first large-scale antiwar demonstration in the USA was  staged at Berkeley by students and faculty opposed to the war. Pointless since polls showed that a majority of Americans supported President Lyndon Johnson’s policy on the war.

Reminds me of Bush…

Battle of The Ages

Today I would like to address a long standing debate that has plagued mankind for far too long. People go up in arms and fistacuffs break out. Some people even grab their pitchforks and torches and go on an old fashion witch hunt over this

What am I talking about? I’m talking about Kraft Miracle Whip vs. Hellmann’s Mayonnaise

I’m pro mayo. I’ve tried Miracle Whip and the only miracle about it is that people actually treat it as a substitute for mayo! It just tastes NASTY!

People…Miracle Whip is a DRESSING, not Mayonnaise! The FDA states that anything labelled “Mayonnaise” must contain at least 65% vegetable oil by weight. Kraft confirms that Miracle Whip doesn’t meet the mayo standard. So using Miracle Whip as a substitute for mayo is like being one of those retards that slap Acura emblems on their Hondas

Ever try Miracle Whip on a sandwich? You bite in expecting that oh-so amazing creamy taste that only mayo can provide. Instead, your poor taste buds are subjected to that  “Tangy Zip” of Miracle Whip

I remember one fateful evening when my mom substituted Miracle Whip for mayo in her macaroni salad. I didn’t know about this heinous crime until I took a bite. Let’s just say my lunch tasted better going down than coming up. Needless to say I didn’t take another bite of that macaroni salad

Proponents of Miracle Whip argue that it’s healthier than mayo. I agree whole heartedly. Mayo has about 11 grams of fat per 15ml serving and Miracle Whip has about 3.5 grams of fat. I would say it’s considerably less fat than mayo. Still, nothing can overcome that awful tangy zip.
Even if Miracle Whip had 0 grams of fat, I wouldn’t eat it. I watch what I eat and try to make some healthy choices. Instead of snacking on a chocolate bar, I grab a banana. I substitute whole wheat for white bread, with the exceptions of for pizza and sub sandwiches. I believe it’s important to treat yourself once in a while so you can enjoy what you’re eating now and then. You can’t be healthy all the time. Do yourself and your family a favour: go ahead and use mayo. It’ll make whatever you’re eating 100 times better. If you’re that concerned about your fat intake, use less or buy the low fat version. Come on people, it’s not that difficult

Kraft, I love your other products; Oreo cookies? Absolutely scrumptious; Cadbury? Delectable; Kraft Singles? Cheeseburger anyone? Miracle Whip? No Thanks! I think Hellmann’s has won. It’s time to pack it in

Enjoy your lunch/dinner with some mayo. You can thank me later

Old Treasures

Today I went through my old stuff. I found some old calendars that I kept. I guess you can say I collect calendars

I have calendars from 2000 to 2006 and 2009. Don’t know what happened to 2007 and 2008. I used to write down things like when I was working (to make sure I got paid properly) and when assignments were due or had tests…even some friends birthdays that I had trouble remembering

I think it’s pretty cool because it’s like a time capsule. You can go back and see what you had going in a particular week. I’m not crazy; I just like going back to things I’ve written in the past

For example, on September 29 2002 I was at work from 3-9. Do you know what you were doing on September 29 2002? Thought not! (Unless you have some crazy memory) I guess a diary would also do that, but I never kept a diary back then

It Happened On #2

Another thrilling and educational It Happened On post..

On September 29 1988…Stacy Allison of Portland, Oregon, is the first American female to reach the summit of Mount Everest, which at 29,035 feet above sea level is the highest point on earth

Also, in 1982 flight attendant Paula Prince buys a bottle of cyanide-laced Tylenol. Prince was found dead on October 1, becoming the final victim. Over the previous 24 hours, six other people had suddenly died of unknown causes in northwest Chicago. After Prince’s death, firefighters Richard Keyworth and Philip Cappitelli realized that all seven victims had ingested Extra-Strength Tylenol prior to becoming ill. Further investigation revealed that several bottles of the Tylenol capsules had been poisoned with cyanide.

Kind of makes you think twice about taking Tylenol. The culprit was never caught, but the deaths led to new tamper-proof medicine containers. The silver lining. Pun intended

Drum Roll Please…

The most exciting day has finally arrived! My new header has been revealed. Tadaaa!!

The background is composed of some (80 to be exact) pictures I have taken, so it kind of represents me. There are also some pictures of myself if you can find them. It’s like a rousing game of Where’s Waldo!

Anyway, I took those pictures and made them all 100×75 pixels, added some text and effects and viola! A new header! Thanks to Photoshop CS5 for making it all possible.

I fancy myself as somewhat of an artist

It Happened On #1

Relax, I’m not going to miss a day of posting. The master plan is to try and post daily. I get tonnes of emails requesting daily posts (I’m lying. I get no emails. Period)

Today is the first of what I hope to be many It Happened On posts. It’s like having a time machine! Kinda?…Not really

Anyway, these posts will be a trip down memory lane for some and a history lesson for others. So without further adieu here we go…..

It happened on September 28 1972…Weekly casualty figures released contained no U.S. fatalities for the first time since March 1965 in the Vietnam War. By this time, there were less than 40,000 U.S. troops left in South Vietnam. Of this total, only a small number, were involved in ground combat. South Vietnamese losses continued to be high since they had assumed the responsibility for fighting the ground battle in the absence of U.S. combat troops

Also, on September 28 1918…A Liberty Loan parade in Philadelphia prompts a huge outbreak of the flu epidemic in the city. By the time the epidemic ended, an estimated 30 million people were dead worldwide

There you have it folks! Death and despair happened on September 28

Tegan and Sara

I got my hands on the complete works of Tegan and Sara a month or so ago and I absolutely love them! Most of their songs are great (I would say all their songs are great but the Sheldons of the world would say that’s statistically impossible). You may or may not of heard of them. They aren’t really mainstream artists. They are identical twin sisters from Calgary. Proof that Canada can produce great talent

Saying I listen to them on a daily basis means a lot coming from me because I’m notorious for losing interest in things quickly. A mild form of A.D.D if you will

I usually HATE live versions of any song and tend to steer clear of them. I just think they’re useless and sound crappier than the studio version. I held this belief until I heard live versions of Tegan and Sara songs. Simply amazing

If I had to choose my favourite album, I would have to say So Jealous. Simply because I like most of the songs and there are only one or two I don’t like. “Don’t like” is a relative term. I’d still gladly listen to these songs but I would rather listen to the others.

Of their 6 albums I like 4. Only ones I don’t like are their first two, Under Feet Like Ours and This Business of Art. I like If It Was You, So Jealous, The Con, and Sainthood. Not since Dido (Yes, I like Dido) have I liked whole albums

It’s hard to choose just a couple of my favourite Tegan and Sara tracks. My list would be very long, but give The Cure, Call It Off, and You Went Away a try. They also have a couple songs with Tiesto and Morgan Page. My ABSOLUTE favourite is Feel It In My Bones (Tiesto). Body Work and Video are also pretty good (Morgan Page). I’ve been listening to Feel It In My Bones for years and it’s still one of my favourites. I don’t know why I didn’t look into Tegan and Sara earlier

They just released a new single, Closer, which I like and are coming out with a new album, Hearthrob, in January 2013. Can’t wait to hear it!

I also got The Killers new album Battle Born. It’s ok

This video is just a bonus. Forward to 4:25 and watch. Never fails to make me laugh!

Animal Farm

So I’ve heard of Animal Farm by Orwell many times but never read it. Supposedly it’s a classic but I know from past experience that usually means a snore-fest. Either way, I decided to attempt reading it. It’s only 122 pages, so it can’t be too bad, but then again Much Ado About Nothing was only 80 pages and I hated that.

So why did I finally decide to pick this book up? Did I read an amazing review about it? No. I watched Good Luck Charlie and Teddy did a book report about it

Stayed tuned for another exhilarating book review

Once again I was working out and listening to the radio like any other day. A song that I don’t understand the lyrics to but somewhat like played for the third time. I always thought it was some reggae song because the singer sounded reggae like. The only words I could make out were “sexy baby (or lady)” and what I thought was “gangster style”. That being the “hook” or main verse

This morning, just before working out, I saw some post on Facebook for some song “gangnam style”. I’ve heard of this song before but the screen-shot looked pretty retarded so I didn’t bother listening to it. This morning was no different. However, I did search it and found out it was some hit song by some Korean guy named PSY

Anyway, I was working out and heard the mysterious “reggae” song and thought “Man, I should find out what this song’s called”. Not because I loved the song but because not knowing what was being said annoyed me

At that moment I had a revelation. Things started clicking in my head..Gangster Style?…Gangnam Style? Could it be??….Korean singer?….can’t understand lyrics? S*** f****! It’s that Gangnam Style song!!

I confirmed my suspicions after showering and eating (not at the same time). Now I’m part of the almost 300 million that have watched (well, I didn’t watch it in it’s entirety. Just a few seconds to figure out if it was the same song) that video on YouTube. FML
