It Happened On #22

TGIF! Here’s Friday’s edition of It Happened On. Hooooray!

It happened on October 19 1982…John Z. DeLorean was arrested and charged with conspiracy to obtain and distribute 55 pounds of cocaine. Though he was acquitted of the drug charges in August 1984, his legal woes were only beginning. He soon went on trial for fraud and over the next two decades was forced to pay millions of dollars to creditors and lawyers. Nevertheless, DeLorean occupies an important place in automotive history: Thanks to its starring role in the 1985 film “Back to the Future,” his gull-wing sports car is one of the most famous cars in the world. He was also credited for designing the GTO and Firebird

Also on October 19 1985, the first Blockbuster opened in Dallas, Texas. Blockbuster opened with about 8,000 tapes displayed on shelves around the store and a computerized check-out process. The first store was a success and Blockbuster expanded rapidly, eventually becoming one of the world’s largest providers of in-home movies and game entertainment
